My Friend Rodger is a heartfelt and empowering children’s book designed to help young readers understand Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) in a safe, relatable way.
OCD often begins with persistent thoughts, fears, or doubts that can feel confusing and overwhelming — especially for children who don’t yet have the words to explain what they’re experiencing. In this story, OCD is personified as “Rodger,” a character who represents the intrusive thoughts and distressing emotions that often accompany the disorder, including anxiety, fear, frustration, and uncertainty.
Through the eyes of a young girl, readers learn how giving OCD a name can make it easier to recognize, understand, and stand up to. As she begins to confront her “Rodger,” she discovers that she is stronger than her thoughts—and that confidence and hope are possible.
Written by author and OCD advocate Jana Hahn, My Friend Rodger serves as both a therapeutic tool and an important conversation starter for families, educators, and clinicians. The developmentally appropriate narrative introduces children to the concept of OCD while gently encouraging evidence-based strategies for managing intrusive thoughts.
Above all, My Friend Rodger offers reassurance and hope—reminding children that they are not alone, and that with understanding and support, recovery is within reach.
